🏰 The 2003 vintage in Burgundy was marked by extreme conditions, including a severe heatwave and drought, making it an exceptionally hot and early year. Despite early April frosts, flowering was successful, and from late May onwards, conditions were exceptionally hot, dry, and sunny. Ample water reserves from winter and some summer rain helped vines cope with the drought. The harvest began as early as August 13th in some southern areas, a phenomenon unprecedented in living memory. Winemakers had to exercise great care during vinification to control temperatures and manage the grapes' extraordinary potential. The red wines from 2003 are characterized by deep, intense colors, complex noses with ripe red and black fruits, spicy notes, and a rich, meaty palate with solid, well-balanced structures. While some initially feared the wines might be overly heavy or baked, many have evolved to show more terroir character and surprising aging potential. 【 A vintage of powerful, personality-driven wines, defying initial expectations for longevity 】.
🍴 This powerful 2003 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, with its ripe fruit and substantial structure, demands rich and flavorful food. Consider pairings such as roasted game birds (e.g., duck, pheasant), slow-cooked beef dishes like Boeuf Bourguignon, or even a hearty truffle pasta. Earthy mushroom dishes would also complement its evolving complexity.
🥂 Ideal for a special occasion dinner, a vertical tasting of Burgundy vintages, or a gathering of serious wine enthusiasts looking to explore the unique character of a challenging yet rewarding vintage. It's a wine that sparks conversation and offers a glimpse into Burgundy's resilience.
