🏰The 1993 Gaja Barbaresco is a 【classic expression of Nebbiolo from a vintage now fully into its apogee of maturity and drinking beautifully】. While the 1993 vintage in Piedmont was somewhat uneven, Gaja's Barbaresco is noted for its superb purity, elegance, precision, and ability to age. John Gilman describes it as an overlooked vintage that is aging beautifully and likely to end up as refined and complete as the lovely 1979s. It offers a deep and complex bouquet of black cherries, sweet dark berries, woodsmoke, gamebird, violet, sour cherries, dry moss, truffle, fennel, and earth. On the palate, it is pure, precise, and full-bodied, with a fine core of fruit, excellent focus and grip, impeccable balance, melting tannins, and a long, complex, gently new oaky finish. Other notes include dried roses, slight tarry notes, balsamic, and fig. It's described as a subtle, feminine wine with a fine finish.
🍴 Excellent with lamb. Also pairs well with classic Italian dishes, roasted meats, game, and truffle-based dishes.
🥂 A superb choice for a special dinner, a gathering of wine connoisseurs, or for enjoying a mature, complex Barbaresco that is at its peak. For a wine of this age, expect the cork and capsule to be fragile. Decanting for 1-2 hours is often recommended to allow it to open up and shed any sediment. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F) to allow its complex tertiary notes to fully express themselves.
