🏰The 2016 Rayas Château de Fonsalette Réserve Syrah is a wine of 【significant power and polish, depth and freshness】, often considered a step up from other cuvées (with the exception of Rayas itself). Notably, the vines for this Syrah originally come from massal selections taken from Chave in Hermitage. The 2016 Rhône vintage was brilliant, particularly in the Southern Rhône, yielding intensely fruity and concentrated wines with a freshness that prevents them from being dull or heavy. The extended growing season, with cool nights during the Indian summer, allowed grapes to reach full phenolic and physiological ripeness, imbuing the wines with great freshness. This Fonsalette Syrah presents a complex, powerful, and big wine. Expect a compelling nose of wild blackberry and blackcurrant layered with licorice, earthy tones of mushroom and truffle, and precise aromas. On the palate, it is silky yet monumental, with a core of ripe black fruit energized by crunchy freshness and spice, offering a vibrant lift with white pepper and exotic spice. It retains elegance thanks to fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity, leading to a long and resonant finish.
🍴 This robust Syrah is an ideal partner for grilled foods such as char-grilled steak, lamb chops with rosemary, or peppercorn-crusted tuna. It also excels with roasts of pork and venison, hearty stews like French cassoulet or beef stew, and rich braised meats. For vegetarian options, consider grilled portobello mushrooms or lentil dishes with Middle Eastern spices. It pairs well with harder, strong cheeses like aged Dutch Gouda or Parmesan.
🥂 Perfect for a celebratory dinner, a special occasion featuring rich meats, or for cellaring to appreciate its long-term evolution. Its complexity and structure make it a rewarding experience for serious wine lovers.
