🏰 The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Tortochot is showing immense promise, hailing from a vintage that is already looking extremely good. Mazis-Chambertin is one of Burgundy's nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district, known for producing deep and powerful Pinot Noir wines. The Tortochot estate, managed by Chantal Tortochot, is respected for its traditional winemaking approach, aiming to reflect the distinct terroir of the area. The vineyard's unique terroir, shaped by the 'alluvial fan' from La Combe de Lavaux, contributes to the richness of the soil.
Neal Martin of Vinous describes the 2022 Mazis-Chambertin as backward yet enticing on the nose, laden with tertiary red fruit and a loamy character, where the terroir truly shines through. The palate is well-balanced with an almost citric spine of acidity, effectively counterbalancing the wine's inherent density and power. It offers tangible minerality on the finish, making it an excellent Mazis-Chambertin from Tortochot. Sarah Marsh MW notes a gorgeous, sweet-fruit aroma, with a seductive and satin-textured palate, revealing forest fruits and a lightly gamey, earthy, and savory touch that harmonizes well with the sweetness. The wine is full-bodied yet light, with a refined finish. When young, these wines are typically bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavors, along with notes of violets and gamey undertones. 【Excellent Mazis-Chambertin with tangible minerality and promising aging potential】.
🍴 This powerful and well-structured red Burgundy pairs beautifully with rich dishes. Consider roast duck, game birds, or herb-crusted lamb. For a more classic pairing, aged Burgundian cheeses or even trout would be excellent choices.
🥂 This Grand Cru is perfect for significant celebrations, intimate gourmet dinners, or as a centerpiece for a serious wine tasting. Its depth and aging potential make it a thoughtful gift for a discerning collector or a special bottle to mark a milestone. It's recommended to drink between 16 and 18°C.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Tortochot is a wine producer headquartered in the village of Gevre-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits subdivision in the northern part of the Côte d'Or in Burgundy. It specializes in the production of wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety and is famous for its wines from three premier vineyards. The winery also has four special wines, produced from their respective Grand Cru vineyards. The Tortochot family's viticultural history in Gevrey-Chambertin dates back four generations to 19th-century winemaker Paul Tortochot, and the current 12 hectare (30 acres) estate continues to be passed down to descendants.
