🏰 【A classic Saint-Estèphe from a challenging 2006 vintage, this Chateau Calon Segur showcases resilience and finesse】, with a heart on its label symbolizing dedication. It presents a deep red-purple color with fresh blackcurrants, stones, and minerals on the nose. The palate is structured with depth, a serious wine with lots of extract, initially quite hard but sturdy and strong with freshness. With age, it has unraveled layers of complexity, offering aromas of dried black fruit, leather, tobacco leaf, and forest floor, leading to a silky, savory, and long palate with beautifully softened tannins.
🍴 This mature Bordeaux is an excellent pairing for roasted or grilled red meats, such as beef or venison. Its evolving complexity also makes it suitable for rich stews, game dishes, or aged hard cheeses.
🥂 Approaching its twentieth birthday, this wine shows quiet authority and is a judicious investment-grade wine. While it can be enjoyed now, it still has ample energy reserves and is anticipated to mature through 2035, benefiting from further cellaring. It's perfect for a significant dinner or for collectors seeking a classic, age-worthy Bordeaux.
BACKGROUND
Château Calon-Ségur is an estate located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux, which was rated as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Medoc and Graves. Calon-Ségur's vineyards are planted on clay and gravel soil, giving the finished wines power and finesse. While Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant in the wines, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are planted as well, providing blending opportunities. The grand vin is aged in new oak, fined with egg whites and produced in relatively small quantities – 80,000 bottles – every year.
