🏰 The 2024 Dönnhoff Krötenpfuhl GG Riesling emerges from a challenging vintage in Nahe, marked by late spring frosts that limited yields but ultimately produced wines of cool, elegant style. Dönnhoff's production was notably restricted this year. Despite the difficulties, the vintage is described as "small but fine," offering good fruit aromas and balanced acidity, generally lighter and fresher than the 2023. This Grosses Gewächs, a pinnacle of German dry Riesling, was tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2025. 【Pinnacle of German dry Riesling, highly acclaimed by critics for its precision, complexity, and age-worthiness.】
Critics have lauded this wine, with James Suckling awarding it 95 points for its restrained citrus and stone fruit aromas, particularly Mirabelle plums, balanced ripeness, and a long Amalfi lemon finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it 93 points, noting its fragrant yet dense, complex, and stony nose with ripe, juicy fruit, leading to a generous, powerful, and mineral palate that is still sharp and citrusy, suggesting it needs time to evolve. Vinous rated it 92-94, highlighting its clear-cut, stony, and taut palate, concentrated with red apple and tangy grapefruit peel notes. It is taut and age-worthy, expected to gain depth over the next decade.
🍴 This dry Riesling is exceptionally versatile. It pairs beautifully with fresh seafood such as oysters, ceviche, and sushi, where its high acidity cuts through richness and enhances citrus notes. Consider it with lighter fish dishes, roasted pork, or roasted chicken with herbs. It also complements soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert, and dishes featuring sweet-sour marinades.
🥂 As a Grosses Gewächs, this wine is ideal for special occasions, fine dining experiences, or as a distinguished addition to a collector's cellar. Its age-worthiness makes it compelling both in its youth and after decades of maturation.
