🏰 The 1998 Chateau de Fonsalette Reserve is a 【cult bottle from the legendary Reynaud family】, often called 'baby Rayas' and celebrated for its profound, mature, and savory character. At 27 years old, this Grenache-dominant (50% Grenache, 35% Cinsault, 15% Syrah) Côtes du Rhône has shed its youthful exuberance, revealing complex notes of dried black fruit, smoked meat, garrigue, leather, and truffle, culminating in a long, layered finish. Emmanuel Reynaud himself noted the '98 vintage's richness of fruit and enticing fruit/acid balance, making it approachable even in its youth, though it continues to evolve gracefully.
🍴 This mature and savory Rhône red is an ideal partner for rich, slow-cooked dishes such as roast lamb with herbs de Provence, braised oxtail, or wild mushroom risotto. For an elevated pairing, consider aged hard cheeses or even a truffle-infused dish.
🥂 This exceptional wine is perfect for a milestone anniversary, a serious wine collector's tasting, or a luxurious dinner where the wine is the star. It's a testament to the aging potential of top Southern Rhône wines.
Serving suggestion: For a wine of this age, expect some sediment, so decanting is recommended to separate it from the clear wine. Open the bottle a couple of hours before serving to allow it to breathe and fully express its complex aromas. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its nuanced profile. Be mindful of the cork, as older wines can have fragile corks; a Durand opener or an Ah-So might be helpful.
BACKGROUND
Château Rayas is a leading producer in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the Rhône Valley, France. It is one of the region's most prestigious estates, and its wines fetch some of the highest prices in southern France. The estate covers 22 hectares, with 15 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Most of their vines are planted to Grenache. The estate's red wine is made solely from Grenache. The château's white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is generally made from Grenache Blanc and Clairette in roughly equaly proportions. Château Rayas has been in the Reynaud family since the 1880s.
