FEATURES
🏰 The 1983 Francois Lamarche Vosne-Romanee La Grande Rue is a 【rare and intriguing Grand Cru from a challenging yet potentially brilliant Burgundy vintage, offering a glimpse into the historical evolution of this monopole vineyard】. La Grande Rue, a monopole of Domaine Lamarche, is nestled between the legendary Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, though it only achieved Grand Cru status in 1992. The 1983 Burgundy vintage was a mixed bag, characterized by a cold, wet spring, devastating May hailstorms in Vosne-Romanée, a hot dry summer, and pre-harvest rains that caused rot. However, strict grape sorting by diligent producers yielded some excellent wines, particularly in the Côte de Nuits, known for their structure and rich fruit. While many 1983 reds were initially hard and tannic, the best have evolved to reveal their full potential. This wine, from a period when it was still classified as Premier Cru, is likely to show tertiary flavors of mushroom, leather, and tobacco, with an old and rustic feel. Expect a light brown color, with an earthy, aged, and enticing bouquet. The palate should be smooth with refreshing acidity, though it may lack the fruit intensity of younger vintages. It embodies the elegant and smooth style of La Grande Rue, with red fruit flavors and firm mineral undertones. 🍴 This mature red Burgundy is best paired with strong-flavored meats such as furred or feathered game (braised, in sauce, or grilled), wild-fowl like Peking duck, or a nice cut of roast veal. Its earthy and savory notes would also complement dishes with mushrooms or truffles. 🥂 An exceptional bottle for a connoisseur's tasting, a significant anniversary, or a reflective moment to appreciate the resilience and evolution of a historic Burgundy. It's a testament to the adage that even challenging vintages can produce delightful surprises with age. Serving Suggestion: Given its age, this wine requires careful handling. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or an Ah-So. Decant gently to separate any sediment, but only shortly before serving to preserve delicate, evolved aromas. Serve at 15-16°C (59-61°F). Expect a wine that is on the edge of dead and alive, with flavors that are a true knife-edge, but approach with a positive expectation for a unique, aged experience.
BACKGROUND
François Lamarche is a historic winery located in the village of Vosne-Romanée, France. The primary grape variety is Pinot Noir. The winery was founded in the early 20th century by Henri Lamarche and his wife, Marie Grivelet, both of whom hailed from Burgundy and had extensive experience in wine production. In 2019, the current owner, Nicole Lamarche, officially renamed the winery to Domaine Nicole Lamarche, and from the 2018 vintage onwards, the wines no longer bear the name of the former owner, François Lamarche.
