FEATURES
🏰 The 1974 vintage in Burgundy was generally disappointing, marked by a cool spring with frosts, followed by a warm July and August, but ultimately ruined by a cold, wet September with rain and even some snow during harvest. It was a large vintage, but many wines were diluted and are now likely past their best. However, La Grande Rue is a monopole Grand Cru in Vosne-Romanée, owned by Domaine Francois Lamarche. It was elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1992, with the promotion being retroactive to earlier vintages. This vineyard is situated in a prime location, nestled between famous sites like Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Romanée-Conti, and La Tâche, sharing similar terroir. Historically, its Grand Cru status was delayed due to tax reasons, not quality. The wine style is typically elegant and smooth, with red fruit flavors. Given its age, this 1974 bottle is a rare find, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of Burgundy winemaking. 【Rarity as a retroactive Grand Cru from a challenging vintage】. Expect a delicate and potentially fragile wine, where tertiary aromas of forest floor, dried flowers, and subtle spice will likely dominate over primary fruit. The cork and capsule may be very old and require careful handling. Decanting is recommended for very old wines to separate any sediment, but do so gently and immediately before serving to preserve delicate aromas. Use a Durand or similar corkscrew designed for old corks. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 This aged red Burgundy would pair beautifully with classic, simple French meals. Consider delicate dishes like roasted poultry, lamb, or duck, especially with earthy elements like mushrooms or truffles. Avoid overly rich or spicy foods that could overpower its subtle nuances. 🥂 This wine is best suited for a very special, intimate gathering of true wine connoisseurs who appreciate the history and evolution of aged Burgundy. It's an experience to savor, rather than a wine for a lively celebration.
BACKGROUND
François Lamarche is a historic winery located in the village of Vosne-Romanée, France. The primary grape variety is Pinot Noir. The winery was founded in the early 20th century by Henri Lamarche and his wife, Marie Grivelet, both of whom hailed from Burgundy and had extensive experience in wine production. In 2019, the current owner, Nicole Lamarche, officially renamed the winery to Domaine Nicole Lamarche, and from the 2018 vintage onwards, the wines no longer bear the name of the former owner, François Lamarche.
