🏰 The 2007 Dow's Vintage Port is a testament to an excellent Douro vintage, marked by very little rainfall in September and October, making it the driest harvest since 1985. Despite some challenging weather earlier in the growing season, moderate August temperatures with cool nights ensured perfectly balanced grape maturation, resulting in a wine of tremendous concentration and intensity. It has been lauded as potentially the greatest Dow ever made, a true long-distance runner built for superb aging. 【 Potentially the greatest Dow ever made, a long-distance runner 】.
Tasting notes describe a deep purple-black color with aromas of kirsch, blackberry compote, prunes, licorice, dark chocolate, spice box, and a hint of coffee grounds. The palate is rich and unctuous, well-structured with firm, finely grained tannins and medium to high acidity, leading to a long finish. Expect bold berry and plum flavors that are round, supple, and ripe, settling into the schist of tannin and char of oak. Further complexities include amazing aromas of lilac, violet, crushed blueberry, and mineral that evolve into black pepper and spices, culminating in a full-bodied, medium-sweet palate with a long, chewy finish that can evolve to tar and asphalt.
🍴 This powerful Vintage Port is a fabulous way to conclude a meal. It pairs wonderfully with chocolate desserts, especially chocolate mousse, and dark chocolate desserts with red fruits. It's also an exceptional match for blue cheeses like Stilton, as well as a variety of hard cheeses such as aged Cheddar, Gouda, Parmesan, and Swiss cheeses. Cured sausages, salami, dates, and figs also make excellent companions.
🥂 The 2007 Dow's Vintage Port is an exciting and obviously very age-worthy wine, best enjoyed after 2022, with a potential to reach its peak in 20 years and drink well through 2050. It is perfect for a memorable moment in the company of good friends, or as a sophisticated digestif. Store the bottle horizontally in a dark place with a constant cool temperature (ideally 12-15°C). This wine will throw a sediment and will require decanting, typically for 1-3 hours, to allow it to soften and open its perfume.
