🏰 【A legendary Super Tuscan, the 1989 Sassicaia, despite a challenging vintage, showcases the resilience and class of this iconic estate, offering immediate drinkability and fragrant intensity.】 The 1989 vintage for Sassicaia was considered an "average year with a difficult harvest" due to a humid summer and late rains, yet Sassicaia managed to overcome these obstacles with its characteristic class. The microclimate of Sassicaia's vineyards helped mitigate the full effect of the challenging weather. The wine underwent approximately 13 days of maceration and was aged for 20 months in barriques, 40% new. Some reviews suggest the wine is at its peak and should be drunk now, as it can fade after an hour. Robert Parker initially gave it a "tasted but not recommended" review, and some recent tastings found it tired and flat with bitter astringency. However, others found it a "real treat" with sweet cassis, spicy toasting, black truffles, tobacco, and barnyard notes. Expect subtle aromas of red plum, sour red cherry, dried redcurrant, minerals, and violet. Juicy and lively on the palate with pristine sour red cherry and tobacco nuances, a long, lively, and acidic finish. Other notes include blackcurrant, black fruits, smoke, cassis, oak, chocolate, cedar box, berry, green pepper, and earthy claret-like flavors. Fully mellowed tannins and a very silky texture.
🍴 Excellent with beef and venison. Also pairs well with rich red meats, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses.
🥂 A rare opportunity for collectors to experience a mature Sassicaia, ideal for a very special anniversary or a vertical tasting of iconic Super Tuscans.
Serving Suggestion: For a wine of this age (1989), expect a more evolved, tertiary aromatic profile. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so careful opening is advised. Decanting is recommended for a short period (30-60 minutes) to allow it to open up, but be mindful that very old wines can fade quickly once exposed to air. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
