FEATURES
🏰 The 1998 Gaja Barolo Sperss is a 【jewel of a Barolo】, a muscular, full-throttle wine from an "interesting" vintage that, despite an inconsistent spring and tumultuous summer, yielded a wine of proven worth. It reveals a perfume of black fruits, truffles, earth, and spice box, with dark tar, smoke, leather, spices, menthol, and black cherries. Dense, massive yet seamless, it offers a very silky and refined red fruit character with cedar and floral notes, and a solid core of fruit and cedar oak. While many 1998 Barolos can be enjoyed now, this Sperss still has upside potential and can age well for 20-25 years.
🍴 This powerful Nebbiolo pairs beautifully with hearty dishes like braised lamb or veal, rich pork or duck preparations, and a robust sausage ragu with tagliatelle. It also shines alongside mushroom or cheese risotto, especially with porcini and truffles, and aged hard cheeses.
🥂 Perfect for a sophisticated dinner, especially with Northern Italian cuisine, or for serious collectors looking to enjoy a mature, age-worthy Barolo.
Serving: This mature Barolo should be decanted for 1-2 hours to allow its complex aromas to fully unfold. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). Given its age, carefully check the cork and capsule condition.
BACKGROUND
Gaja is one of Italy's most prestigious and influential wineries, led by the visionary Angelo Gaja. While famous for Barbaresco, Gaja also produces exceptional Barolo. 'Sperss' (meaning 'nostalgia' in Piedmontese dialect) comes from a vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. It is a deeply structured, powerful, and complex Barolo, known for its firm tannins, dark fruit, tar, and truffle notes, requiring significant aging to reach its peak.
