🏰 The 2013 Chateau Climens is an exceptional sweet white wine, hailed as a triumph for Sauternes and Barsac in a climatically challenging year, earning the No. 4 spot in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2016. This first certified organic Chateau Climens, made entirely from Semillon grapes, presents a pale lemon-yellow color and a very fragrant bouquet with notes of white flowers, buttercup, citrus fruits, honey, and a faint hint of oyster shell. The palate is beautifully balanced, spicy, with ginger and nutmeg infusing the honeyed fruit, offering expressive notes of candied citrus peel, honey-drizzled white peaches, and brioche with wafts of marzipan and ginger. It boasts a wonderful citrus peel intensity, great freshness, and a long, energetic finish, promising decades of aging potential.
🍴 This luscious dessert wine is a perfect match for fruit-based desserts. Consider pairing it with New York Ricotta Cheesecake with Poached Cherries in Hibiscus, or a classic creme brulee. For a sophisticated Cantonese pairing, try it with chilled mango sago or almond cream with egg white. A Western pairing could be foie gras, blue cheese, or a tarte tatin.
🥂 This stunning wine is ideal for celebrating milestones, a luxurious dessert course, or as a contemplative sip on its own. Its subtle elegance makes it approachable young, but it has decades of aging and evolving ahead. Serve well-chilled, around 10-12°C (50-54°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity.
BACKGROUND
Château Climens is a wine producer located in the Sauternes village of Barsac on the left bank of the Gironde River. The only grape planted in the vineyards at Château Climens is Semillon, which thrives on the limestone-rich soils in the vineyards. The grapes are harvested and brought into the winery, plot by plot, where they are gently pressed before fermentation in oak barrels. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels on lees for about 20 months. Wines from the best vintages can last decades – a recent tasting of the 1921 vintage revealed a rich, balanced and zesty wine.
