🏰 The 1999 vintage for Montrachet Grand Cru was an 【excellent year for white 布根地 (Burgundy) wines】, with top-end Grand Crus from blue-chip domaines like Comtes Lafon still offering immense enjoyment. This particular vintage of Montrachet has been described as flirting with perfection, showcasing an "unequaled complexity, elegance and power". It's a stunning expression, bursting with energy and palpable minerality, even given the warmth of the growing season.
Tasting notes reveal a captivating evolution, with attractive burned caramel aromas leading to a juicy, vital, fresh, and springy palate. Expect massive fruit of orange blossoms and limestone, intertwined with notes of hazelnut, black currant leaf, gunflint, and bitter lemon. The wine is intensely focused, with pronounced acidity balanced by a rich sève, culminating in phenomenal length and a satin-textured personality. This 1999 Montrachet is considered to have reached its apogee, offering a deeply impressive and complex experience.
🍴 This magnificent Montrachet Grand Cru demands equally grand pairings. It is superb with rich seafood like lobster or scallops in a creamy sauce, roasted poultry (such as capon or guinea fowl), or delicate veal dishes. Classic pairings also include chicken and turkey. For a cheese course, consider aged Comté or a rich, triple-cream Brie.
🥂 This is a wine for a truly momentous occasion, a celebration of life's finest moments. Given its age and Grand Cru status, careful handling is paramount. While not as old as to necessitate extreme caution with the cork, a gentle opener is advisable. Decanting for 30-60 minutes can help it open up, but monitor its evolution closely. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 12-14°C (54-57°F), to allow its intricate layers of aroma and flavor to unfold beautifully.
BACKGROUND
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy, France, making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. The primary grape variety is Chardonnay, with a small portion being Pinot Noir. The estate is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894.
