🏰 【A superb choice for lovers of serious, ageworthy Chenin Blanc, the 2019 Clos de L'Ecotard Saumur L'Enroulee offers depth and complexity that rival top white Burgundy】. This 'one-off' cuvée was born from the devastating black frost in Saumur in 2019, blending fruit from different parcels to compensate for reduced yields. The Loire Valley 2019 vintage was generally good, producing wines that are enjoyable young but also have aging potential. Expect a pronounced perfume of white blossom and jasmine, with the estate's hallmark quince, enhanced by notes of lanolin. The palate is taut and elegant, showcasing pear, quince, and citrus oil layered over chalky minerality and a subtle honeyed edge, all supported by superb acidity and a long, saline finish.
🍴 This versatile Chenin Blanc pairs beautifully with shellfish, roasted poultry, or creamy vegetable dishes. It's also an excellent match for omakase, where its refined minerality can truly shine.
🥂 Ideal for a sophisticated dinner, a special seafood feast, or as a thoughtful gift for a white wine enthusiast. Its balance of ripe fruit and electric acidity makes it both approachable now and promising for cellaring through 2035 for richer, nutty complexity. Serve slightly cool.
BACKGROUND
Clos de l'Écotard is a highly respected estate in Saumur, founded by Michel Chevré, who was the long-time vineyard manager for the legendary Thierry Germain (Domaine des Roches Neuves). Working organically and biodynamically, Chevré focuses on expressing the pure limestone terroir of the region. 'L'Enroulée' is a top cuvée made from old-vine Chenin Blanc. It is aged in oak and offers a profound, textured palate with notes of orchard fruit, honey, and a striking, saline minerality.
