🏰 The 1982 vintage in Bordeaux is widely considered one of the greatest, marking a pivotal moment for the region's move into the modern age. The growing season was idyllic, with perfect conditions for budburst and flowering, followed by balmy, dry weather throughout the summer. The 1982 Haut-Bages Libéral is noted as one of the good wines from this heralded vintage, still drinking beautifully at over 40 years old. It holds sentimental value as the first vintage made by Bernadette Merlaut after her grandfather acquired the estate.
This wine is fully mature, displaying modest bricking on the rim. The bouquet offers vestiges of red fruit commingling with red brick and light brown leafy scents, along with notes of roasted black cherries, cigar ash, fresh herbs, dark soil elements, and a smoky topnote. It's decidedly "old school" in style, with real presence and cohesion, a little rustic yet harmonious, with fine tannins and decent weight. Light tobacco notes mixed with desiccated orange peel are also present. It's medium-bodied, soft, and easy on the palate, with a respectable core and melting tannins. 【 A celebrated 1982 Bordeaux from a legendary vintage, showcasing elegant maturity and "old school" charm 】
🥂 This iconic 1982 Bordeaux is perfect for a celebratory dinner, a significant anniversary, or a gathering of serious wine enthusiasts who appreciate the nuances of a well-aged claret. It's a testament to the longevity of great Bordeaux.
For a wine of this age, extreme care is paramount. Stand the bottle upright for at least a week to allow all sediment to settle. Decant very gently and slowly, using a light source to monitor the sediment, just before serving. Old corks are very fragile; consider using a two-pronged Ah-So opener or a Durand. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to preserve its delicate aromas and structure.
🍴 It pairs excellently with classic meat dishes such as beef and venison. Consider roasted lamb, venison, or a traditional beef Wellington. It also complements veal marsala.
