FEATURES
🏰 The 2006 vintage in the Southern Rhône Valley, while not universally lauded as a blockbuster, produced many very good wines, especially for those who managed the harvest well. The growing season saw a warm spring, followed by a hot July and a cooler, wetter August. A return to warm, dry weather in September was crucial for ripening. Wines from this vintage often show good fruit concentration, balanced acidity, and a savory, garrigue-driven character. De La Janasse is a highly respected producer, and their Côtes du Rhône Les Garrigues 2006 would likely offer a classic expression of the region, with notes of ripe red and black fruits, herbs, and a touch of spice, reflecting the 'garrigues' (Mediterranean scrubland) influence. This wine should be drinking beautifully now, showcasing a lovely evolution of its primary fruit into more complex tertiary notes. 🍴 This Rhône blend would be fantastic with hearty Mediterranean cuisine. Think slow-cooked lamb tagine, grilled sausages with herbs, rich beef stew, or even a robust vegetarian lasagna. Hard cheeses like Pecorino Romano or aged Gouda would also pair well. 🥂 Perfect for a casual gathering with friends, a barbecue, or a cozy dinner at home. It's a versatile wine that can elevate everyday meals. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour can help it open up.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Janasse is a fairly new property in the Southern Rhone Valley, France. The actual estate is situated in the area of Courthezon. Domaine de la Janasse is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer owned and operated by the Sabon family. It was founded in 1967 by Aimé Sabon. Domaine de la Janasse began with 15 hectares (37 acres) of estate vineyards and now has more than 90 hectares (220 acres), with 15 hectares (37 acres) in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Janasse grows all 13 permissible grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from the standard Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah to lesser known components like Counoise, Vaccarèse, and Bourboulenc. Many of the white Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties, along with Syrah, are planted in the slightly cooler vineyards to the north in east-exposed vineyards.
