The 2012 vintage for Château Beychevelle, a Fourth Growth Saint-Julien, was a relatively cool year, yet the wine is considered one of the stars of the appellation, exceeding vintage expectations. This was also the first year with technical director Romain Ducolomb. The wine presents an opaque purple color with beautiful crème de cassis notes and floral underpinnings. On the nose, it offers a lovely and open bouquet with black fruit, charcoal, and cedar notes. The palate is elegant and powerful, rich and intense yet light on its feet, with sweet tannins and a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel. Expect a bramble-lined core of blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry fruit, backed by anise and singed wood spice notes, with a bolt of graphite pinning down the finish. Now firmly in its secondary phase, it opens with cedar chest and tobacco leaf before easing into red currant, dried black cherry, and a touch of plum skin. The tannins are resolved into a supple, powdery frame, with red and black fruit mingling with savory notes of leather, bay leaf, and a faint savory spice. 【Exceeds vintage expectations with elegance and power】. This wine is drinking beautifully now and is expected to continue to evolve well through 2024, with some suggesting it can be enjoyed for another 25-30 years.
🍴 This classic Bordeaux blend is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes. Think roasted beef, venison, lamb, or hard cheeses. Its structure and fruit profile would also complement dishes like duck confit or a hearty mushroom and truffle pie. For an Eastern pairing, consider Cantonese roasted goose or a robust Korean galbi.
🥂 An excellent choice for a formal dinner, a special celebration, or a gathering of Bordeaux lovers. It's also suitable for a vertical tasting of Château Beychevelle to appreciate its evolution.
