WINE REGION
France Bordeaux Saint-Emilion
FEATURES
🏰The 1983 Bordeaux vintage was generally good, producing tasty and fruity red wines that were powerful, remarkably long, and balanced, with the Right Bank (Saint-Émilion) performing well. This Chateau Fombrauge 1983, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, is a 【muscular and thick wine offering a lot of weight and intensity, having developed a great personality and ready to drink now】. Expect ripe, sweet berry fruit in a direct, powerful style, with notes of spice, smoky oak, kirsch liqueur, vanillin, and earthy undertones. 🍴 Chinese Cantonese food pairing: This mature Bordeaux would be excellent with braised lamb shanks with roasted vegetables, filet mignon with peppercorn sauce, or a rich beef in dark sauce. For a more traditional Cantonese pairing, consider roasted suckling pig or braised beef brisket. Aged cheeses would also be a good match. 🥂 fit for event suggestion: A thoughtful choice for a significant birthday, a reunion with old friends, or a themed tasting of mature Bordeaux. Kindly remember that older corks and capsules can be fragile, so open with care. While many 1983 Bordeaux wines are past their prime, a well-preserved bottle from a good estate like Fombrauge can still offer a beautiful and nuanced experience, best enjoyed now.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Fombrauge is a Saint Emilion Grand Cru property. It is the largest Grand Cru Classe property, with a 59-hectare (143-acre) vineyard, and like many others in the region, makes a Merlot-dominant wine. The vineyard has diverse soils ranging from chalky clay on limestone to iron-rich deposits and molasse soils. Fombrauge also has a range of different exposures, giving a complexity of terroir which is unusual for the appellation. The majority of the vineyard is planted to Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon making up the remainder.
