🏰 The 1970 Château Fonplégade represents a rare and historic expression from Saint-Émilion, hailing from a vintage generally considered very good to excellent in Bordeaux, particularly for the Right Bank. Wines from 1970 were known for their structure, ripeness, and impressive longevity, with many still offering enjoyment today. 【 A rare and historic expression of Saint-Émilion's terroir 】
At over five decades old, this wine would have evolved significantly, showcasing the beauty of aged Bordeaux. Expect a bouquet rich in tertiary aromas: dried fruits, leather, tobacco leaf, forest floor, and perhaps hints of truffle and exotic spices. The palate would likely be elegant and refined, with tannins fully resolved into a silky texture. Good acidity would still provide freshness, leading to a lingering finish with savory and earthy notes, a true reflection of its venerable age.
For a wine of this age, careful handling is paramount. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or an Ah-So to minimize breakage. Decanting is highly recommended to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but do so gently and just before serving, as very old wines can fade quickly once exposed to air. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 This mature Bordeaux would be a magnificent pairing for classic, rich dishes. Think roast lamb with herbs, a perfectly executed beef Wellington, or slow-cooked game such as venison. Mature hard cheeses like aged Comté or Parmesan would also create a delightful harmony.
🥂 This 1970 Château Fonplégade is an ideal choice for a milestone birthday or anniversary, a significant commemorative event, or a contemplative evening for a true connoisseur who appreciates the nuanced beauty of extremely aged wines. It's a journey through time in a glass.
