FEATURES
🏰 The 1998 vintage for Burgundy was considered a challenging but ultimately rewarding year, with René Engel's Echézeaux Grand Cru from this period often described as a thoroughly enjoyable Burgundy at full maturity. While some critics noted it might not have offered the same panache as other Engel vintages, it still presented a simple but nicely defined nose with notes of decayed autumn leaves and pine over rustic red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity, balanced with bitter cherry and sous-bois scents. This wine is a testament to the late Philippe Engel's light hand with extraction, emphasizing the natural qualities of the fruit. 【 Thoroughly enjoyable Burgundy at full maturity 】 🍴 This mature Echézeaux Grand Cru, with its earthy and red fruit notes, would be exquisite with classic French cuisine. Think roasted duck with cherry sauce, coq au vin, mushroom-based dishes like wild mushroom risotto, or delicate game birds. Subtly spiced dishes that don't overpower its elegance would also be suitable. 🥂 This 1998 Echézeaux is perfectly suited for a celebratory dinner among Burgundy aficionados or a quiet evening appreciating a mature, elegant Pinot Noir. It's a wine that speaks of history and the unique terroir of the Côte de Nuits. Serving Advice for Older Vintages: For a wine of this age, extreme care is advised. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Use a two-pronged Ah-So opener or a Durand to minimize the risk of a crumbling cork. Decanting is recommended for 30 minutes to an hour to allow the wine to open up and separate from sediment, but be mindful of its fragility and avoid over-aeration. Serve at a cool cellar temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
