Sylvie Esmonin, Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 1er Cru, 2008
🏰 The 2008 vintage for Sylvie Esmonin's Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is a testament to the producer's skill in a challenging, cooler vintage for Burgundy. Despite the difficulties, Esmonin crafted a wine that is described as wonderfully alive, intense, and structured. 【Considered Grand Cru quality】. Critics have noted its captivating nose of black fruits, bitter chocolate, sweet oak, and stony minerality, with suggestions of fresh blood and game. The palate is dense, mineral-driven, and beautifully detailed, showcasing excellent precision and a tautly muscled, balanced finish. It's a wine of class and grace that delivers remarkable focus and length, still decidedly on the young side with anticipated maturity from 2018-2028.
🍴 This elegant Gevrey-Chambertin pairs exquisitely with roasted game birds like pheasant or partridge, beef bourguignon, or mushroom-based dishes. Its savory and earthy notes also make it a fine match for aged hard cheeses.
🥂 Perfect for a sophisticated dinner party with fellow Burgundy enthusiasts, a special anniversary, or a vertical tasting of Clos Saint-Jacques to appreciate its evolution.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is a wine producer based in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits subegion, producing a range of wines from vineyards sites in both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The majority of the wines produced by the estate are Pinot Noir-based, but it does also have a single white wine within its portfolio made from Chardonnay grapes. The Esmonin family originally came from nobility and has lived in the Burgundy region since the reign of the Dukes of Burgundy (which ended in the 15th Century). The estate was previously known as Domaine Michel Esmonin et Fille, named after the father of the current proprietor, Sylvie Esmonin.
