WINE REGION
France Burgundy Gevrey-Chambertin
FEATURES
🏰 The 1993 vintage in Burgundy was often underrated but proved to be better than average, yielding healthy grapes and well-colored, fruity wines that have aged and developed beautifully. While some critics initially dismissed it due to perceived unruly acidity, many 1993s, particularly from esteemed producers like Trapet Père & Fils, have demonstrated impressive longevity and are still showing remarkably well. Trapet, a family-owned winery in Gevrey-Chambertin, is celebrated for crafting some of the finest Pinot Noir wines in the world. The 1993 Gevrey-Chambertin (from Trapet and similar producers) typically displays a medium-plus ruby red core, gently fading to a watery edge. The nose is distinctly Gevrey, with pronounced earthy notes and a youthful blend of primary red and black cherry. On the palate, it offers good depth, a reasonable richness, and almost perfect acidity, supported by present yet supple tannins. Expect captivating aromas of ripe red fruits like cherries and raspberries, underpinned by dried herbs, tobacco, earthiness, wild mushrooms, leather, and a subtle hint of white pepper. The fruit can be surprisingly primary, reminiscent of baked raspberries, and intensely flavorful. 【 Underrated vintage showcasing the elegance and aging potential of Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 】 🍴 This classic Burgundy, having aged gracefully, is still very much alive and offers a rewarding experience. It pairs ideally with Coq au Vin, grilled duck breast with cherries, or a classic Boeuf Bourguignon. It's also an excellent choice with aged Comté cheese, mushroom risotto, roasted poultry, or grilled lamb rack. 🥂 Ideal for a special dinner or a vertical tasting, this wine is a testament to the aging potential of Gevrey-Chambertin. For a 1993 Burgundy, careful handling is key. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Use a two-pronged Ah-So opener or a Durand to extract the potentially fragile cork. Decanting for 30-60 minutes can help the wine open up, but be cautious not to over-aerate, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16°C (60°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine Trapet is a wine company comprised of two estates, one in Alsace, the other in Burgundy. The company in its current dual-region configuration formed when Andrée Trapet inherited her parents' vineyards in Alsace in 2002. Her husband Jean-Louis has run Domaine Trapet Père et Fils in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1990, when he took over from his father Jean.
