🏰 The 2008 vintage for the Rhône Valley was "unusually poor" with heavy rains and wildly oscillating temperatures, leading to a difficult flowering and reduced yields. Despite the challenging vintage, Jean-Louis Chave's Saint-Joseph wines are typically mature after 6-7 years and can develop up to 10-15 years in good vintages. This wine is made from estate-grown grapes from reclaimed hillside vineyards, traditionally vinified and bottled unfiltered.
This Saint-Joseph Rouge is described as "【feminine in expression with delicate notes of pepper, blackberries & tart strawberry】". It offers bright red fruit out of the gate, more elegant than powerful, with tertiary flavors emerging after aeration. Expect leathery, stony, smoky complexity with a bit of youthful red fruit, balanced by acidity. It's a "very nice and smooth" wine with an intriguing aroma and balanced flavor.
🍴 A natural partner for lamb. Enjoyed with grilled cheeseburger (no bun) and beef tenderloin. Generally shines with food, especially cream-based sauces for white Chave wines, suggesting a versatility for the reds with rich dishes.
🥂 Suitable for a casual dinner with friends, a hearty meal, or for those who appreciate an "old school wine from an old school vintage". It's drinking well now and for many years to come.
