FEATURES
The 1979 Krug Vintage Champagne Brut is a magnificent expression from a house renowned for crafting exclusively prestige Champagnes since its foundation in 1843. This vintage, particularly when poured from magnum, has been described as encapsulating everything there is to love about Champagne, showcasing remarkable energy and class. Tasting notes reveal an almost clinical delineation on the nose, exuding spellbinding minerality, hints of wet limestone, brioche, almond, and white chalk. The palate is exquisitely balanced with a fine line of acidity, making it feel effortless, with traces of blood orange and quince decorating a gloriously fanning finish. It develops into a wonderful mature champagne with notes of apricot, bread, and almonds, displaying the classic Krug style with a masculine yet balanced acidity structure and very good length. 【 Rated 98 points by Wine Spectator and Vinous, highlighting its utter class and potential for decades of pleasure. 】 This exceptional vintage Champagne is perfect for grand celebrations, milestone anniversaries, or as a truly special gift. Its complexity and maturity make it a contemplative wine, ideal for intimate gatherings where its nuances can be fully appreciated. Given its age, this 1979 Krug requires careful handling. Old corks can be fragile, so consider using a two-pronged cork puller or a Durand to ensure a clean extraction. The wine should be served chilled, but not overly cold, ideally around 10-12°C (50-54°F) to allow its intricate aromas to unfold. Decanting is generally not recommended for old Champagnes, as it can dissipate delicate aromatics and effervescence too quickly. Instead, serve directly into flutes or tulip-shaped glasses. Allow it some time in the glass to fully express its glory, as it needs love and care to open up. This Champagne pairs beautifully with delicate seafood, caviar, aged Parmesan, or even roasted poultry, where its acidity and complexity can cut through richness and complement savory notes.
BACKGROUND
Krug is one of Champagne's most prestigious houses and its wines are among the most collectible and expensive in Champagne. The house was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a native of the Mosel region in Germany, who had moved to France and spent some time working for Jacquesson, the leading Champagne house of the time. Krug's philosophy was that every Champagne should be the best possible expression, and eschewed the common idea of a hierarchy of Champagne. Instead, he began to craft a premium wine from a reserve of wines vinified separately by the growers themselves, a wine that would eventually become the Grande Cuvée.
