🏰 A serious and structured Bordeaux from the incredible 2016 Saint-Estèphe vintage, Frank Phelan offers a harmonious blend of power and elegance as the second wine of Château Phélan Ségur. The 2016 vintage was an exceptional year for Saint-Estèphe, producing wines with rich black fruit, velvet tannins, fresh acidity, and powerful structure. [4, 11, 19] Expect a deep ruby red with garnet hues, revealing spicy notes of nutmeg, clove, and dark berries. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy, silky tannins, dark expressive fruit, and a long, savory finish. [39, 45]
🍴 A classic Médoc pairing, this wine is excellent with roast lamb, grilled red meats, aged hard cheeses, or a hearty slow-braised beef. [39]
🥂 Ideal for a classic Sunday roast, a formal dinner, or a gathering with fellow Bordeaux enthusiasts.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Phelan Segur is a wine estate in the Saint-Estephe region of the Medoc, producing a wine of the same name. It was rated as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2003, although this classification was later annulled due to legal wrangles. In total there are 70 hectares (173 acres) of vines on the hillocks and plateaux of Saint-Estephe; neighbors include chateaux Montrose and Calon Segur. These are divided into in four sections on clay and gravel soils, and are planted to about 58 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 39 percent Merlot and 1.5 percent each for Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are harvested manually and are initially sorted using manual and vibrating sorting tables, before an advanced optical sorting machine makes the final selection. 39 different tanks allow the fermentation of fruit according to different vineyard parcels. The grand vin is aged for around 12 months in French oak barriques, with new wood never exceeding 50 percent.
