FEATURES
🏰 The 1982 Bordeaux vintage is legendary, often hailed as one of the greatest of all time, and Chateau Leoville Poyferre 1982 stands as an enduring icon from this exceptional year. The growing season was near perfect, leading to an abundant crop of ripe, rich fruit, and it was this vintage that famously launched Robert Parker's career. This wine is fully mature yet still drinking beautifully, with many experts suggesting it has another 10-30 years of cellaring potential. Tasting notes reveal a complex and graceful perfume of sweet red and black currants, woodsmoke, tobacco leaf, baking spices, and cedar. On the palate, it boasts a dense purple color, stunning concentration, power, and sweet, polished tannins, with notes of cassis, plum, and cherry. 【 An enduring icon from the legendary 1982 Bordeaux vintage, renowned for its exceptional quality, opulent fruit, and remarkable longevity. 】 🥂 This magnificent wine is perfect for a truly special occasion, such as a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday, or a formal tasting event where its historical significance and profound complexity can be fully appreciated. It's a wine that invites contemplation and celebration. Serving Advice: Given its venerable age, handle this bottle with the utmost care. Keep it upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Be prepared for a potentially fragile cork and capsule; a two-pronged cork puller (like a Durand) is highly recommended. Gentle decanting is essential to separate the wine from its sediment and allow it to breathe, but monitor it closely as very old wines can sometimes fade quickly. Serve at a classic cellar temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 This powerful and elegant Bordeaux pairs exquisitely with classic French cuisine. Think of roasted or braised red meats like beef Wellington, a rich lamb stew, or game dishes such as venison. It also complements aged, firm cheeses beautifully. The wine's structure and fruit concentration will stand up to rich flavors without being overwhelmed.
BACKGROUND
Château Léoville Poyferré is an estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc. It was rated a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, and was traditionally the softest of the three Léovilles. The 80-hectare (198-acre) vineyard is planted 65 percent to Cabernet Sauvignon with 25 percent Merlot, 8 percent Petit Verdot and 2 percent Cabernet Franc. The gravelly soils provide good drainage for the vines, which helps negate disease pressure and leads to concentrated fruit. In the winery, the grapes are cold-macerated for colour extract and aromatic purity, and fermented in stainless steel vats before aging. Château Léoville Poyferré is aged in oak barriques for 18 to 20 months, and the proportion of new oak has increases in the last few decades.
