Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Carruades De Lafite, 1999
🏰 The 1999 Carruades de Lafite is an 【impressive second wine made in the style of its grand vin sibling, Chateau Lafite Rothschild】. Despite 1999 being a challenging Bordeaux vintage marked by heavy September rains and hail, top estates like Lafite managed to produce decent wines. This wine reveals graphite, lead pencil, black currant, and cedary aromas, with a medium body, sweet glycerin, and a gorgeously expansive texture and palate. It offers lovely aromas of sweet, ripe berries with hints of chocolate, silky, caressing tannins, and a long, fruity aftertaste. It's described as ebullient and vivacious, akin to a Saint Estephe on the earthy, austere finish.
🍴 This classic Bordeaux red pairs wonderfully with traditional red meat dishes, lamb, and game. Its refined character also makes it suitable for more elegant preparations.
🥂 With early drinking charm and character, this wine is good for enjoying now, but its structure allows it to last for 15-20 years. It's a testament to the quality achievable even in a difficult vintage by a top producer.
The grapes are harvested from vineyards on the Carruades plateau, adjacent to the Château Lafite flagship vineyards, sharing similar terroir.
The winery selects only one-third of its wine each year for the Lafite flagship, using the remainder for Carruades.
The Lafite flagship is aged in 100% new barrels, which are then used for Carruades the following year.
In the early 20th century, Carruades de Lafite Rothschild became a bestseller after export, gaining more fame than the Lafite flagship. Some sommeliers promoted Carruades de Lafite as a special wine above the Lafite flagship. To correct this unintentional error, the winery renamed Carruades de Lafite to Moulin des Carruades until the 1980s, when they decided to revert to Carruades de Lafite Rothschild...
The 1974 Château Lafite mentioned in an article published in the February 13, 1978 issue of New York Magazine... Rothschild's second label is called Moulin des Carruades.
