FEATURES
🏰From the renowned M. Chapoutier, the 1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge La Bernardine is an outstanding vintage, offering a complex and subtle nose of blackcurrant and plum, evolving into spicy aromas and a lush, sweet palate with excellent integration of aged fruit and earthy spice. This wine, potentially drinking even better from bottle than cask, hails from vineyards with Quaternary period terraces featuring large, round pebbles from the former Rhône riverbed. It presents a deep purple color. The nose is complex and subtle, revealing blackcurrant, plum, followed by roasted coffee, cinnamon, cherry, morello cherry, and licorice, alongside a big, smoky profile of dried herbs and black cherry jam. On the palate, spicy aromas develop into animal scents, with a ripe, plump, and sweet character, a lush texture, and sweet tannins. Expect excellent integration of red and black fruits, leather, and earthy spice from its bottle age, with some notes suggesting a surprisingly light-footed yet concentrated profile. 🍴 This classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an excellent partner for grilled and roasted red and white meats, including leg of lamb or garlic roasted chicken. It also pairs well with game, hearty stews, strong cheeses, and even vegetarian moussaka with lentils. 🥂 Ideal for autumn/winter dinners, special family gatherings, or for anyone seeking a classic and mature Rhone Valley experience. Serving suggestion: Serve at 16-18°C. Decanting for 1-2 hours is highly recommended to allow it to fully open up and to separate any natural sediment. This wine is mature and drinking well now, though some notes suggest it might be past its peak for primary fruit development.
BACKGROUND
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively.Outside of the flagship vineyards in Hermitage, Chapoutier has vineyards across the Rhône, including plots in Côte Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu. These span both single-vineyard expressions and generic AOC-level wines. Chapoutier also makes regional Côtes du Rhône wines, and has viticultural interests in Australia (Domaine Tournon), Portugal and Alsace.
