FEATURES
🏰 The Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1978 is an extraordinary wine from a Bordeaux vintage dubbed the "Miracle Vintage," saved by idyllic sunny days in September and October after a challenging start. This particular bottle was singled out in a 40-year retrospective tasting as having an 【extraordinary volume of bouquet, followed by perfect mouth-filling ripeness, elegance, and complexity】. While many 1978 Bordeaux wines are now past their prime, top examples like Las Cases may still be drinking well, offering a beautiful ruby-purple color and richly scented cassis and berry-like aromas. 🍴 This mature Bordeaux would be magnificent with classic French cuisine such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef Wellington, or a rich mushroom and truffle dish. For an Eastern pairing, consider a refined Cantonese braised beef short rib or a delicate Peking duck. 🥂 A truly special bottle for a milestone anniversary or a rare vertical tasting, offering a glimpse into Bordeaux's past. Kindly reminder of old cork and capsule. This wine, being over 40 years old, should be handled with care. Stand the bottle upright for at least 24-48 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decant gently just before serving to separate the wine from the sediment, and allow it to breathe for a short period (15-30 minutes) to open up its delicate aromas without over-oxidizing. Serve at cellar temperature (around 16-18°C or 60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Château Léoville-Las Cases is an estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves. The estate has a history dating back to the mid-17th century, when it used to be part of a much larger estate. There are 98 hectares (242 acres) of vineyards, planted with 66 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 24 percent Merlot, 9 percent Cabernet Franc and 1 percent Petit Verdot. The vineyard's soils are mostly gravel over sand and clay, with some areas where the clay reaches the surface. The proximity of the Gironde moderates weather extremes, lowering the risk of frost and allowing grapes to ripen earlier than vineyards further inland. The vines are on average 40 years old.
