🏰 The 1993 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline comes from a vintage that was considered troublesome for the Northern Rhône, yet Guigal's single-vineyard wines, including La Mouline, still turned out well. La Mouline is one of Guigal's most emblematic wines, known for its voluptuous, silky, and intensely aromatic character. While some critics initially noted a lighter body and herbaceousness, others found it to evolve beautifully with air, revealing secondary and tertiary flavours of dried fruits, meats, and spices, with surprising density. The wine is a blend of Syrah and a small percentage of Viognier, contributing to its aromatic complexity and softening the tannins. 【 Emblematic Côte-Rôtie from a challenging vintage 】. This is an aged wine, and while it may not possess the sheer power of more celebrated vintages, it offers a unique glimpse into the elegance and evolution of a mature Côte-Rôtie from a legendary producer.
Serving Advice for Older Vintages: For a wine of this age, careful handling is paramount. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or an Ah-So wine opener. Stand the bottle upright for at least 24-48 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting is recommended for 1-2 hours to allow the wine to breathe and shed any bottle funk, but monitor it closely as very old wines can fade quickly once exposed to air. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 This mature Côte-Rôtie, with its evolving complexity, pairs wonderfully with classic French cuisine. Think roasted lamb, beef tenderloin with herbs, game birds like pigeon or quail, or dishes featuring truffles. Its savoury and spicy notes would also complement aged hard cheeses.
🥂 The 1993 E. Guigal La Mouline is perfect for a special anniversary, a significant birthday for someone who appreciates aged wines, or a contemplative tasting among serious collectors. It's a wine that sparks conversation and offers a journey through time, ideal for an intimate gathering.
BACKGROUND
E Guigal is one of the most famous wine producers in the Rhône. The company was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis on the west bank of the Rhone, just a stone's throw from the famous sun-baked slopes of the Côte Rôtie. Guigard's flagship wines are the famous "LaLa": La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. La Landonne is 100% Syrah, from 40-year-old vines and aged in oak barrels for a similar amount of time.
