FEATURES
🏰 The 2002 Bordeaux vintage was challenging, but a miraculous September saved the Left Bank, allowing top estates like Léoville Las Cases to produce classic, Cabernet-driven wines of real finesse. Château Léoville Las Cases 2002 is a 【powerful and racy Saint-Julien, highly praised for its elegance, precision, and remarkable aging potential, even in a cooler vintage】. It displays an intense red tile color with brilliant reflections. The nose offers intense notes of evolution, cooked fruits, kirsch cherry, and black olive, followed by aromas of cigar box, truffle, and toasted bread. The attack is frank and precise, carried by beautiful acidity, revealing a powerful and racy body. Melted tannins mingle with notes of prunes and spices, blossoming with great freshness on a long and peppery finish. Critics have given it high scores, noting its dense, deep flavors and fine, firm, compact structure. 🍴 This wine will be sublimated with roast beef stuffed with foie gras and trumpets of death, a rack of lamb confit, a filet-mignon en croûte, or minced venison with truffles. It's also a perfect match with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, pasta, and uncooked pressed paste cheeses like Cantal or aged Mimolette. 🥂 This Léoville Las Cases is ready to drink now but can be cellared for another 8 to 10 years, reaching its peak between 2027 and 2030. It's an excellent choice for a significant celebration, a formal dinner, or a serious wine tasting. Decanting for 3-6 hours is recommended for young vintages, while older ones might need less, just enough to remove sediment. Serve at 15.5°C (60°F).
BACKGROUND
Château Léoville-Las Cases is an estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves. The estate has a history dating back to the mid-17th century, when it used to be part of a much larger estate. There are 98 hectares (242 acres) of vineyards, planted with 66 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 24 percent Merlot, 9 percent Cabernet Franc and 1 percent Petit Verdot. The vineyard's soils are mostly gravel over sand and clay, with some areas where the clay reaches the surface. The proximity of the Gironde moderates weather extremes, lowering the risk of frost and allowing grapes to ripen earlier than vineyards further inland. The vines are on average 40 years old.
