FEATURES
🏰 The 1990 Chateau Montrose La Dame de Montrose is an outstanding second wine from the esteemed Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux, primarily a Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The 1990 vintage was exceptional in Bordeaux, characterized by an early flowering, a warm summer, and perfectly timed September rains, resulting in grapes of profound ripeness and balance. La Dame de Montrose 1990 is considered one of the best second wines ever tasted, offering a more forward and slightly less concentrated "baby version" of the monumental Grand Vin. 【One of the best second wines ever tasted, offering a forward and less tannic expression of the monumental 1990 Montrose Grand Vin】. This wine presents a dense dark plum and purple color. The nose is complex, with scents of earth, cassis, licorice, and spices, alongside evolved fruit, funk, raspberry, rose petal, and tea. On the palate, it offers fresh, zippy fruit with a deeper funk, described as alive, delicious, and unique. It is full-bodied and super-rich, yet less tannic than the main Montrose bottling, showing secondary nuances and approaching full maturity. 🍴 While specific pairings for this wine were not detailed, classic Bordeaux pairings are highly suitable. It would complement a range of classic meat dishes, including lamb, beef, and game. Consider roasted leg of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, or duck confit to harmonize with its rich profile. 🥂 This mature La Dame de Montrose is an excellent choice for special dinners and celebrations, offering a complex and evolved Bordeaux experience without the full price of a Grand Cru Classé. It is close to full maturity and is expected to drink well for at least another 30 years. **Serving Advice:** As an older vintage, this wine should be handled with care. Old corks can be fragile, so a reliable corkscrew is essential. Decanting for 30-60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and to separate any sediment that may have formed over time. Serve at a cool room temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F) to allow its intricate aromas and flavors to fully express themselves.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Montrose is a leading estate of the Saint-Estèphe commune of the Médoc region in Bordeaux. It was ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, and is regarded as one of the very best properties at that level. The 95-hectare (235-acre) vineyard exists, unusually for modern Bordeaux, as one single entity. It is sited on an exposed site of deep, coarse gravels with sand and a little clay, overlooking the Gironde. The immediate proximity of the water has a moderating effect on both frost and summer heat, and the pebbles in the soil retain daytime warmth into the evening, aiding ripening. The estate is situated around a mile from Cos d'Estournel and the border with Pauillac. The vineyard is planted to a range of the classic Bordeaux varieties: 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 32 percent Merlot, 6 percent Cabernet Franc and 2 percent Petit Verdot.
