🏰Jean-Louis Chave is a legendary Northern Rhône producer, crafting some of the world's most iconic Syrah wines from Hermitage. The 1988 vintage in the Northern Rhône was generally good, producing structured wines with excellent aging potential. A 1988 Chave Hermitage Rouge is a mature, complex wine, likely showing 【a profound bouquet of black olive, smoked meat, elegant leather, black pepper, and dark fruit, with a savory depth and a long, evolving finish that speaks of its noble origins】.
🍴 Excellent with roasted game, rich lamb tagine, classic beef bourguignon, or strong, aged cheeses. For an Asian pairing, consider a robust braised duck or a rich Cantonese beef brisket.
🥂 A profound wine for a serious collector's dinner, a special occasion celebrating a milestone, or a deep dive into classic Rhône. For a wine of this age, careful handling is key. Stand the bottle upright for a day or two before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decant gently just before serving to remove sediment and allow it to breathe for a short period, but be mindful of over-decanting very old wines. Ensure a good corkscrew is used, as older corks can be fragile.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerful wine producer headquartered in the village of Mauves in the Saint-Joseph region, across the Rhone River from Hermitage. It owns about 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land and grapes. The terraced estate now covers eight different plots on the hill, providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old.
