🏰This 1997 d'Auvenay Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres 1er Cru hails from a vintage that delivered 【delicious, full-bodied white Burgundies】, often described as fat and fleshy with good acidity, though some critics noted variability and susceptibility to oxidation. The 1997 white Burgundy vintage, while not universally lauded, produced charming wines for relatively early drinking, with grapes showing excellent sugar levels and acceptable acidity. Expect a nose hinting at lemon and lime, evolving to a more subdued, waxy profile with pineapple and a hint of wet wool, or even a touch of hazelnut and an oxidized note on the finish. The palate offers good weight, reasonable sweetness, and a multidimensional character with perfect acidity in the best examples.
🍴 This elegant white Burgundy pairs beautifully with noble fish like roasted sea bass or monkfish, pan-fried scallops, or even a delicate chicken in cream sauce. For a more luxurious touch, consider it with foie gras toasts and stewed onions, or fresh goat cheese.
🥂 Perfect for a sophisticated dinner where a mature, complex white wine is desired, or a special anniversary celebration. This vintage is generally considered to be at or past its peak, offering a unique glimpse into a bygone era of Burgundy.
Serving an older white Burgundy like this requires care. Expect the cork to be fragile; a two-pronged cork puller (Ah-So) is recommended. Serve slightly chilled, around 12-14°C (54-57°F), but avoid over-chilling which can mask its delicate aromas. Decanting is generally not advised for very old white wines as it can accelerate oxidation, but a quick check for sediment and aeration in the glass is fine.
BACKGROUND
Domaine d Auvenay is a small Burgundy wine estate located in Saint-Roman. It is the third entity in the Leroy empire, named after Lalou Bize-Leroy and was previously run by her husband Marcel Bize until his death in 2004. There are 4 hectares (10 acres) of vines, but these include plots of the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares and Bâtard-Montrachet, as well as a handful of top cru vineyards, including Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières and Meursault les Gouttes d 'Or.
