FEATURES
🏰 The 1988 vintage in Bordeaux was saved by a long, dry, and hot summer after an exceptionally cold and wet first half. It's considered the most "classic" of a trio of great vintages (followed by '89 and '90), with wines possessing excellent extract and concentration for prolonged storage. The 1988 La Mission Haut-Brion is an underrated vintage for the estate, drinking very well today.
This is a firm, masculine, and tannic wine, showcasing classic La Mission terroir characteristics of smoke, scorched earth, spice, roasted meats, and camphor. Aromatics are pure Graves, with vivid and intense scents of charcoal, gravel, and tobacco smoke, underlying rich dark fruit, savory earthy, and cedary flavors. It offers dark plum/garnet color, good body, and appears to be aging nicely, displaying enough youthful characteristics to hold for another two decades. Recent tastings reveal sweet blackberries, cassis, tobacco leaf, dark, gravelly soil tones, coffee bean, violets, and a touch of medicinal overtones. 【 A classic, age-worthy Bordeaux from an underrated vintage, showing remarkable evolution 】
🥂 This mature and complex Bordeaux is ideal for a sophisticated dinner party, a significant anniversary, or a serious wine collector's tasting. It's a wine that invites contemplation and appreciation of its evolved character.
For a wine of this age, handle with care. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Decant gently just before serving to separate the wine from its sediment and allow it to breathe, typically for 2-4 hours. Be mindful of the cork, which may be fragile. Serve at around 15.5°C (60°F) to allow its complex aromas to unfold.
🍴 It pairs beautifully with classic meat dishes such as veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, and game, especially roasted, braised, or grilled preparations. Asian dishes, hearty fish like tuna, salmon, mushrooms, and pasta are also good matches.
