🏰 The 2001 vintage in the Rhône Valley was widely regarded as legendary, marking the end of an exceptional run of top years. It was characterized by a hot, dry summer and a perfect September mistral, leading to concentrated, age-worthy wines across the entire valley. M. Chapoutier's Ermitage Vin de Paille from 2001 would be a testament to this, offering a deeply colored, richly fruited wine with admirable freshness and good acidity. Expect intense aromas of dried apricots, honey, candied citrus peel, and floral notes, with a luscious, complex palate and a long, sweet finish. 【A legendary Rhône vintage producing concentrated, age-worthy sweet wine】.
This wine, being over two decades old, may show some fragility. The cork and capsule might be delicate, so handle with care. Decanting is generally not necessary for Vin de Paille, but ensure it's served chilled, around 8-10°C (46-50°F), to best appreciate its sweetness and acidity.
🍴 This exquisite Vin de Paille would be a sublime pairing with foie gras, blue cheeses like Roquefort, fruit tarts, or crème brûlée. For an Eastern pairing, consider a delicate almond tofu dessert or a sweet glutinous rice dumpling.
🥂 Perfect for a celebratory dessert course, a special occasion with cheese, or as a luxurious digestif.
BACKGROUND
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively.Outside of the flagship vineyards in Hermitage, Chapoutier has vineyards across the Rhône, including plots in Côte Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu. These span both single-vineyard expressions and generic AOC-level wines. Chapoutier also makes regional Côtes du Rhône wines, and has viticultural interests in Australia (Domaine Tournon), Portugal and Alsace.
