FEATURES
🏰 The 1990 vintage in Burgundy is widely regarded as one of the most successful, particularly for red wines, often compared to the finest since 1959. The growing season saw an early budbreak, followed by cool weather during flowering, which led to some millerandage and concentrated berries. A long, hot summer was alleviated by timely August rains, ensuring optimal ripening. The harvest, beginning in late September, yielded a large crop of rich, healthy grapes. Henri Jayer's Echezeaux Grand Cru from 1990 is a legendary wine, reflecting the era where modern Burgundy began, known for its richness, structure, and deep color. 【 A legendary wine from a benchmark vintage, showcasing richness and structure 】. Expect a bouquet with well-developed aromas of spices, plums, black-raspberries, and sweet new oak, evolving into notes of leather, exotic tea, dried rose petal, truffle, and forest floor. The palate is rich, medium to full-bodied, with moderate tannins, low acidity, and an impressive, long finish. Given its age, this wine embodies the classic, mature style of old Burgundy, offering complex tertiary aromas that develop beautifully over time. While still vibrant, older wines can be delicate. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or a two-pronged cork puller. Stand the bottle upright for several days before serving to allow sediment to settle. Decant gently just before serving to separate the wine from any sediment and allow it to breathe, but be mindful not to over-aerate, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 This exceptional Echezeaux Grand Cru would be sublime with refined dishes such as roasted squab, pan-seared foie gras, truffle-infused beef tenderloin, or a classic Burgundian beef bourguignon. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté or Époisses cheese. 🥂 This is a wine for a truly momentous occasion: a significant anniversary, a high-profile wine tasting, or a private dinner for serious collectors. It represents a pinnacle of Burgundian winemaking and a rare opportunity to experience a piece of wine history, perfect for deep appreciation and contemplation.
BACKGROUND
Henri Jayer is a Burgundy red wine producer known for making some of the most acclaimed and expensive Pinot Noirs in the world. Jayer retired from winemaking in 2001 and died in 2006, leaving the winery to his nephew Emmanuel Rouget, with all vintages since 2001 released in his name. Henri Jayer's wines were produced in limited quantities and in dwindling quantities, making them some of the most collectible and expensive wines in the world. While critically acclaimed, the reputation of Jayer wines was further enhanced by the emergence of wine-related books such as the Japanese manga series Drops of God. The brand itself was founded by Jayer when he inherited 3 hectares (7 acres) of land in the Côte d'Or, which included land in the Grand Cru Echézeaux vineyard.
