🏰 The 2001 vintage in Burgundy was generally very good, producing wines with refreshing acidity and good structure. Domaine René Engel, though no longer in operation, is revered for its elegant and expressive Pinot Noirs from Vosne-Romanée. The 2001 Vosne-Romanée is characterized by classic Vosne-Romanée spice, notes of raspberry jam, forest floor, and a slightly baked quality to the fruit. It's often described as suave, jammy, and medium-bodied, with fruity, satin-textured black cherry notes. These wines are highly sought-after due to their finite supply and the domaine's legendary status. 【 A highly sought-after expression from a legendary, now-defunct domaine 】
🍴 This elegant red Burgundy, made from Pinot Noir, is a superb match for refined poultry and game dishes. Consider roast duck, goose, or other game birds. Its savory and fruity notes also complement dishes with earthy elements like mushroom tarts or truffle preparations. For a more robust pairing, try it with a classic coq au vin or a delicate lamb dish.
🥂 This wine is ideal for a special occasion, a gathering of Burgundy enthusiasts, or a moment to savor a piece of winemaking history. Its maturity means it's ready to drink, but careful handling is advised. If sediment is present, stand the bottle upright for a day or two. A brief decant of 30-60 minutes can help it open up, but be cautious with older wines. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
