FEATURES
🏰 The 1997 vintage in Burgundy was a mixed bag, characterized by an early, uneven flowering, followed by cool and wet conditions in June and July. August brought hot and humid weather, with September seeing storms that, while initially useful, also raised concerns about rot. Despite these challenges, grapes achieved good sugar levels and acceptable acidity, with minimal rot. While white wines from 1997 tended to be fat, fleshy, and lower in acidity, the reds were inconsistent. However, skilled producers crafted some glorious wines. This Rene Engel Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 1997, from a challenging year, offers a surprisingly primary and concentrated profile. On the nose, expect fine red fruit with a developing pyrazine-inflected floral note, alongside hints of balsamic and a bloody-red, iron-infused fruit. As it evolves, roasted notes of coffee bean, tobacco, and dark chocolate may emerge. The tannins are typically ripe and smooth, making it approachable. 【A surprisingly primary and concentrated Grand Cru from a challenging vintage, offering early appeal.】 🍴 This mature red Burgundy would be exquisite with roasted poultry, such as guinea fowl or duck breast, especially when served with mushroom-based sauces or truffle-infused dishes. It also pairs beautifully with delicate game birds or a selection of mild, aged cheeses. 🥂 This wine is perfectly suited for a special, intimate dinner for Burgundy enthusiasts who appreciate the nuanced evolution of mature wines. It’s an excellent choice for a quiet evening of contemplation, allowing its complex aromas and flavors to unfold gracefully.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
