FEATURES
🏰 The 1996 Rene Engel Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru is a 【remarkable Burgundy, whispering tales of a magnificent harvest and poignant winemaking finesse】. This vintage, from the fabled terroirs of Burgundy, stands as a testament to a year marked by climatic serendipity and meticulous cultivation. Expect a very enticing, fully mature bouquet with wild mushroom and woodland/damp earth aromas infusing loose-knit black fruit, along with hints of plums, spice, blood orange, and leather. On the palate, it offers considerable authority and volume with nice bright acids, and a broad, expansive attack. Some notes describe it as having earthy, mushroomy sweet bing cherries, with hints of spices and a profound depth, leading to an almost velvety mouthfeel and a long, lovely finish. Serena Sutcliffe, MW, noted in 2022 that it was all plummy raisins on the nose, yet crisp, bouncy, and fresh on the palate, with silky glycerol and the acidity of the cool 1996 nights. 🍴 This aged Grand Cru Pinot Noir pairs wonderfully with classic Burgundian dishes like Coq au Vin or Boeuf Bourguignon. It also complements roasted game birds such as duck or pheasant, and earthy mushroom dishes. For an Asian pairing, consider delicate Cantonese roasted meats like char siu, or even a refined dim sum selection. 🥂 This is a wine for contemplation and appreciation, ideal for a special occasion or a gathering of serious wine enthusiasts. It's a treasure for those looking to diversify their investment portfolios with finesse and substance. Given its age, it's crucial to handle with care; check the cork and capsule for condition. Decanting for about 2 hours can help it open up and reveal its full complexity, but be mindful of its delicate nature. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to allow its nuanced aromas and flavors to shine.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
