🏰The 1994 Rene Engel Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru is a classic and savory Pinot Noir, noted as one of the best 1994s from Burgundy. This mature Grand Cru offers a 【lovely Vosne Romanee nose with floral overtones, lots of spices, and slight undergrowth】, leading to a palate with 【decent energy and stuffing, medium plus finish】. Expect a 【pale light medium red color with a slightly orange meniscus】, and a 【light tart strawberry nose】. The palate is 【light-medium bodied with good tart strawberry fruit, depth, grip, and elegant acidity】, culminating in a 【long finish】. It also presents a 【restrained but complex aromatic expression, with hints of smoke and lichen, black fruits, and sweet spices】, and an 【extremely persistent smooth mineral finish】.
🍴 This exquisite Grand Cru Burgundy is a perfect match for finely prepared red meats and game. Consider pairing it with 【roasted duck in sweet and sour sauce, beef tournedos, roast chicken with chanterelle mushrooms, or a classic game bird dish】. It also complements 【stews, marinated red meats, and a variety of cheeses】 beautifully.
🥂 An excellent choice for a special anniversary, a celebratory dinner, or a gathering of serious Burgundy enthusiasts. Its maturity and complexity make it a truly rewarding experience. Given its age, this wine is best served at around 16-17°C (60-62°F) to allow its nuanced bouquet to fully develop. Older vintages like this may have delicate corks and capsules, so careful opening is advised. Decanting for a short period, just enough to remove any sediment, can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged aeration.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
