FEATURES
🏰 The 1986 Rene Engel Echezeaux Grand Cru hails from a challenging Burgundy vintage marked by rain and rot, yet careful growers in the Côte de Nuits, like Rene Engel, managed to produce commendable wines. This Grand Cru is known for being more masculine than the Grands-Echezeaux, presenting an aromatic range of black fruit supported by a very fine tannic structure. Expect notes of red and dark cherry, violet, subtle earth, and fine spice, with an elegant and refined profile and silky tannins. Domaine René Engel was a leading estate in Vosne-Romanée, acquired in 2005 and absorbed into Domaine d'Eugénie, making pre-acquisition bottles like this 1986 increasingly rare and highly collectible. The Echezeaux plot itself boasts very old vines, some up to eighty years old. 【From a legendary, now defunct estate, making pre-acquisition bottles increasingly rare and collectible.】 As a mature wine from a vintage almost four decades old, this Echezeaux embodies a classic, evolved style. Older wines can be delicate; expect subtle nuances rather than overt fruit. Handle with utmost care, as the cork and capsule may be fragile. Serving Advice: Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 14-16°C (57-61°F). A gentle, brief decant (30-60 minutes) may help to awaken its aromas and separate any fine sediment, but be cautious with very old bottles to avoid over-aeration. 🍴 This elegant red Burgundy pairs beautifully with classic Burgundian fare such as roasted duck, game birds, mushroom dishes, or a delicate beef bourguignon. Its refined character also makes it a superb match for aged Comté or Gruyère cheese. 🥂 Ideal for a special anniversary, a quiet evening of contemplation, or a gathering of Burgundy enthusiasts who appreciate the historical significance of a rare, mature wine from a legendary producer.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
