🏰 The 1993 Domaine René Engel Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a legendary red Burgundy, hailing from a vintage that, while not universally declared a blockbuster, produced some truly exceptional wines for those who navigated its challenges. René Engel, a revered name in Vosne-Romanée, crafted wines known for their elegance and deliciousness. The 1993 Clos de Vougeot is described as an extraordinary bottle, showcasing a stunning and pure bouquet of black cherry, wild plums, woodsmoke, violets, and lovely soil tones. On the palate, it reveals a beautiful core of tannin and acidity, still showing amazing three-dimensional breadth and depth, with fine old vine intensity. Some tasters note a beautiful nose of red and blue fruit with a touch of iron, fresh and harmonious on the palate, with spice and cola notes. It's considered graceful and wonderfully balanced, likely at its peak but with potential to age further. 【Extraordinary Depth and Elegance】
Given its age, this wine is a testament to the longevity of fine Burgundy. Old corks and capsules can be fragile, so handle with care. Decanting is highly recommended for older vintages like this to allow the wine to breathe and separate from any sediment. Gently open the bottle, ideally with an Ah-So opener, and decant slowly, watching for sediment. Serve at cellar temperature (around 16-18°C) in large Burgundy glasses to appreciate its complex aromatics.
🍴 This mature Grand Cru Pinot Noir would be exquisite with classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon, or roasted duck with cherry sauce. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes like mushroom risotto or truffle-infused poultry.
🥂 This is a wine for a very special occasion, perhaps a milestone anniversary or a significant birthday celebration. It's a contemplative wine, best enjoyed with fellow connoisseurs who appreciate the nuances of aged Burgundy, allowing for quiet reflection and appreciation of its history and complexity.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
