🏰 The 1991 Des Comtes Lafon Montrachet Grand Cru is a rare and highly esteemed white Burgundy, representing a significant vintage for this iconic producer. Montrachet Grand Cru is renowned as one of the world's greatest white wine vineyards, producing wines of immense complexity, depth, and longevity. While specific detailed tasting notes for the 1991 vintage are less common due to its age and rarity, wines from this era and vineyard are typically characterized by their profound minerality, rich texture, and evolving tertiary aromas. Expect notes of honey, toasted nuts, dried apricot, and a subtle earthiness, layered over a still-present core of citrus and stone fruit. The wine would have developed incredible complexity and a silky, opulent mouthfeel, showcasing the pinnacle of Chardonnay expression. Given its age, the condition of the cork and capsule is paramount, but a well-preserved bottle promises an extraordinary experience.
🍴 This venerable Montrachet Grand Cru demands equally refined food pairings. Think classic French haute cuisine: pan-seared scallops with truffle, lobster thermidor, or roasted poultry with a creamy sauce. Avoid overly strong or spicy flavors that would overpower its delicate nuances. A simple preparation of fresh white fish with butter and herbs could also allow the wine to shine.
🥂 This is a wine for a truly momentous occasion, a once-in-a-lifetime tasting, or a very special anniversary. It's a contemplative wine, best enjoyed with discerning palates who appreciate the evolution and history in a glass. Serve slightly chilled, around 12-14°C (54-57°F). For wines of this age, careful handling is crucial. Stand the bottle upright for several days before opening to allow any sediment to settle. Use a two-pronged cork puller (Ah-So) or an Durand corkscrew to minimize the risk of cork breakage. Decanting is generally not recommended for very old white wines, as it can cause them to fade quickly; instead, pour directly into glasses and observe its evolution.
BACKGROUND
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy, France, making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. The primary grape variety is Chardonnay, with a small portion being Pinot Noir. The estate is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894.
