FEATURES
🏰 The 1998 vintage in Burgundy was generally considered good, particularly for the Côte de Nuits, producing wines with good structure, freshness, and a savory character. While not a blockbuster year, many wines from top Grand Cru sites like Clos Vougeot have aged gracefully, offering a classic expression of Pinot Noir. A 1998 Haegelen Jayer Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, if well-stored, represents a mature and complex example of this renowned vineyard. At over 25 years old, this wine will have developed a beautiful array of tertiary aromas, including dried red fruits, forest floor, leather, tobacco, and subtle spice, layered over its fading primary fruit. The palate should be smooth and harmonious, with integrated tannins and a persistent, savory finish, showcasing the elegance and depth that comes with age. Expect a wine of considerable charm and intellectual appeal. 【A mature and elegant expression of Clos Vougeot Grand Cru】. Serving Advice for Old Wines: Wines of this age can be fragile. Stand the bottle upright for several days before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Handle with care, as old corks can be brittle; a Durand opener or an Ah-So might be beneficial. Decant gently just before serving to separate the wine from its sediment, but be mindful not to over-aerate, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 This mature Grand Cru Burgundy is best paired with classic, refined dishes. Consider roasted game birds like pheasant or partridge, slow-cooked beef or lamb, truffle-infused pasta, or a selection of mature, earthy cheeses. For an Eastern pairing, a delicate braised mushroom dish or a refined Peking duck would be excellent. 🥂 This is a wine for a significant celebration, a special anniversary, or a contemplative tasting among connoisseurs. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the evolution of a fine Burgundy over decades, a true testament to the art of winemaking and the magic of aging.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Haegelen-Jayer, like Domaine Henri Jayer, is a now-defunct estate, with 2009 being its final vintage. Located in the village of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy, France, the winery primarily cultivated Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. It was established by Henri Jayer's niece, Madeleine Jayer, and her husband, Alfred Haegelen.
