🏰 The 1998 Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Fonteny 1er Cru is a mature and distinguished red Burgundy, offering a glimpse into the elegance of aged Pinot Noir. While specific detailed reviews for this exact vintage and vineyard might be less common now, 1998 in Burgundy was a challenging but ultimately rewarding vintage, particularly for Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits, producing wines with good structure and aging potential. Bruno Clair is a highly respected producer known for crafting wines that beautifully express their terroir. Expect a wine that has evolved to reveal complex tertiary aromas of dried leaves, forest floor, leather, and subtle spice, layered over fading red fruit notes. The palate should be refined with softened tannins and a lingering, savory finish, showcasing the graceful aging of a well-made Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru.
🍴 This mature Burgundy would be exquisite with classic French dishes like coq au vin, roasted game birds, or truffle-infused pasta. For a Cantonese pairing, consider braised goose with dried tangerine peel or a delicate steamed pigeon with Chinese herbs.
🥂 This is a wine for contemplative enjoyment, perfect for a quiet evening or a small gathering of true wine aficionados. Given its age, expect a delicate wine that requires careful handling. The cork and capsule might be fragile, so use a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Decant gently for 30-60 minutes to allow any sediment to settle and the wine to breathe, but be mindful not to over-aerate. Serve at cellar temperature (around 16-18°C) to best appreciate its evolved complexities.
