Des Comtes Lafon, Meursault Clos De La Barre, 1990
🏰 The 1990 Burgundy vintage was a standout year, widely regarded as one of the finest in the latter half of the 20th Century, with exceptionally high quality across the region, particularly in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The white crop was generous, offering plenty of fruit and refreshing acidity, indicating a fine vintage. Meursault 1990 is specifically highlighted as an exceptional vintage for white wines. Tasting notes for 1990 Meursault often mention ripeness and sweet spice, with concentration, overall balance, and refinement. Other descriptions include subtle oak toast, faint gunflint, and an understated yet complex fruit profile that is much longer and more interesting than the 1989, with an exciting burst on the mid-palate. 【 1990年是默爾索白酒的卓越年份,以其成熟度、豐富度和複雜性而聞名 】.
🍴 This exceptional white Burgundy would be a magnificent partner for richer white fish, such as pan-seared halibut or cod, poultry in creamy sauces, or luxurious dishes like foie gras or lobster. It also pairs beautifully with mature Comté or Gruyère cheese.
🥂 While 1990 white Burgundies were generally considered best drunk earlier, top examples from this exceptional vintage may still be drinking very well. Some sources suggest that 1990 whites should ideally be consumed within the next few years (from 2022, so by 2032). When opening a wine of this age, exercise extreme caution with the cork, which can be fragile; an Ah-So opener is highly recommended. Gentle handling is key. Decanting should be done carefully and only for a very short period, primarily to remove any sediment, as prolonged exposure to air can cause older white wines to lose their delicate nuances. Serve at a cool cellar temperature (around 12-14°C) in appropriate white Burgundy glasses.
BACKGROUND
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy, France, making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. The primary grape variety is Chardonnay, with a small portion being Pinot Noir. The estate is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894.
