🏰 The 1945 vintage is universally recognized as one of the greatest Vintage Port years, often cited as a "superlative Vintage" and a "reference year" by which others are judged. It was the first post-War vintage, characterized by a dry year with a very hot summer and timely rains at the end of August. The grapes were small and thick-skinned, leading to deeply colored, rich wines of very high quality and immense concentration, despite low production. Almost all major Port houses declared this vintage. 【 A legendary, superlative vintage for Port, a benchmark for all others 】. Souham's Porto 1945, if well-cellared, would be a testament to this extraordinary year, offering incredible longevity and complexity. Expect a full-bodied, deep purple wine in its youth, evolving into a majestic expression with notes of floral, dark fruit, sweet and spicy cherry, maple, caramel, chocolate, and butterscotch. This is a truly rare and historic bottle. Given its extreme age, handling with utmost care is paramount. The cork will likely be very fragile; a Port tong or a two-pronged cork puller is highly recommended. Stand the bottle upright for at least a week, preferably longer, to allow all sediment to settle. Decant very slowly and carefully, ideally through a fine mesh filter or cheesecloth, just before serving. The wine should be served at cellar temperature, around 15-18°C (59-64°F).
🍴 This venerable Vintage Port is best enjoyed on its own to fully appreciate its complexity. However, it can be magnificently paired with strong, aged cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort, dark chocolate desserts, or nutty pastries.
🥂 This is a wine for a truly once-in-a-lifetime occasion: a significant anniversary (70th, 80th birthday), a historical commemoration, or a gathering of serious Port collectors. It's a profound experience, a sip of history, and a moment to be cherished and shared with the most esteemed company.
