🏰 The 2009 Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal Rouge is a 【legendary Hermitage, rated a perfect 100 points by both Robert Parker and Jeb Dunnuck】, hailed as "as good as Hermitage gets." This vintage was an exceptional year for Northern Rhône, described as a "sweet shop vintage" producing generous and age-worthy reds with widespread quality and well-integrated tannins.
🍇 Even inkier in color than the 2010, this wine is "locked and loaded with phenomenal notes of jammy black raspberries, creme de cassis, crushed violets, smoked earth and spice." It's thick and unctuous on the palate, with incredible density, a huge mid-palate, and a layered, multi-dimensional, seamless, elegant texture. Producer notes also highlight ripe fruits, smoky aromas, powerful velvety tannins, and blackberry jam.
🍴 This magnificent Syrah demands equally robust pairings, such as rich red meats, hearty game dishes, slow-cooked stews, and strong, aged cheeses.
🥂 A true collector's item, this Hermitage is built for longevity, with a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2049, and is expected to last 50+ years. It has already hit its prime drinking window and promises another 20-30 years of evolution.
BACKGROUND
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively.Outside of the flagship vineyards in Hermitage, Chapoutier has vineyards across the Rhône, including plots in Côte Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu. These span both single-vineyard expressions and generic AOC-level wines. Chapoutier also makes regional Côtes du Rhône wines, and has viticultural interests in Australia (Domaine Tournon), Portugal and Alsace.
